15th August 2024 Energy Price Alert – UK Gas & UK Electricity

On Wednesday, wholesale gas and electricity prices were broadly stable with small movements either way.

As we have seen, the market is susceptible to geopolitical issues but if today’s peace talks in the Middle East reach a conclusion, then there should be further stability with the potential for drops.

Gas: Gas prices were mixed as fighting continued in Kursk yesterday, however, gas flows were still nominated at 42.4mcm, staving off market worries for another day. This morning, nearer term contracts are trading down on last nights close.

Power: Power contracts throughout the curve were volatile yesterday, tracking closely to what is happening at the NBP hub. Gains in benchmark UKA carbon contracts supported some of the far curve.

Oil: Another volatile day for oil prices as Middle East tensions continued to weigh on the market, however, an increase in US inventory levels helped keep pricing in check.

Carbon (EU ETS): The ICE Dec-24 closed at €71.87/t yesterday. The contract is currently trading downwards at €71.31/t this morning.

Carbon (UKAs):  The ICE Dec-24 traded to £38.81/t at the end of yesterday’s session. The contract is currently trading at £38.75/t this morning.
